29 APR 2016 - LIAM HENDRIKS TAKES ON TOUGH TIGERS!
Here is an update of what some Aussies and former AMLB imports have been doing in the US major leagues:

Liam Hendriks

Australia's LIAM HENDRIKS was in the firing line again and he could not escape a few bullets heading his way during his Oakland Athletics 4-9 loss to the heavy hitting Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park. Not for the first time recently Liam was called upon with his team already under the cosh with a 1-5 deficit coming into the bottom of the fifth. He started strongly by striking out the side around a one out single to Jose Iglesias. His punch out victims were Mick Castellanos, Bobby Wilson and Anthony Gose. In the bottom of the sixth Hendriks ran into the very experienced and really daunting heart of the Tigers lineup and it proved a tough task for him. Ian Kinsler started the rot with his leadoff single up the middle before our man had J.D Martinez struck out on a full count. Mighty Miguel Cabrera singled to put two aboard and the ultra-dangerous Victor Martinez sent them all home with his long ball over the right field fence. He put away his second inning of work with Justin Upton struck out swinging and Nick Castellanos flying out to right field. The five strike outs were a positive part of his pitching line that read 2.0ip 4h 3r 3er 0bb 5k (9.26 ERA).

The not-so grizzled veteran DAVID ROSS (MLB All-Stars 2001) teed off for his second home run of the season while batting 1-3 (.269) plus a walk and the RBI to assist the Chicago Cubs to overcome the Milwaukee Brewers 7-2 today.

Former ABL infielder MYCHAL GIVENS (Perth Heat 2012) posted his second win of the season by pitching 1.1ip 2h 0er 1bb 2k for the Baltimore Orioles who knocked over the Chicago White Sox 10-2. He took his season record to 2-0, 2.38 ERA in the early weeks of the 2016 season.

28 APR 2016 - TYLER COLLINS IN STRIFE FOR "FLIPPING THE BIRD"!
Here is an update of what some Aussies and former AMLB imports have been doing in the US major leagues:

Tyler Collins
Recent ABL import TYLER COLLINS (Sydney Blue Sox 2012) finds himself in strife and facing a probable period of suspension after being the centre of a very unusual incident during a major league game a couple of days ago. We only heard during the ESPN telecast yesterday about Collins' misadventure that occurred during the Detroit Tigers' home series sweep at the hands of the travelling division rival Cleveland Indians.
Apparently Collins completely lost a fly ball in the outfield that fell to the ground and a compounding sequence of defensive mishaps followed. The Tigers' fans at Comerica Park responded with a chorus of boos and a frustrated Collins could not restrain himself from signalling to them with an "extended middle finger" that is generally referred to as "flipping the bird". Tyler Collins will not be the first or the last outfielder to lose sight of a fly ball but, we guess, he must maintain his respect for the fans who pay good money to give professional baseballers the type of salaries they receive.
27 APR 2016 - LIAM HENDRIKS HANGS TOUGH v TIGERS!
Here is an update of what some Aussies and former AMLB imports have been doing in the US major leagues:

Liam Hendriks

Didi Gregorius

Okay, we always like to be positive about our Aussie baseball stars but, to be quite honest, our one and only major league flag bearer LIAM HENDRIKS has been asked to handle some pretty tough assignments this season. In his latest outing Liam was summoned from the bullpen in the bottom of the fifth with two on and two out while his Oakland Athletics were in a deep 0-6 hole against the Detroit Tigers. He completed the first part of his task by striking out recent ABL import TYLER COLLINS (Sydney Blue Sox 2012) on five pitches to end the inning. Back for the bottom of the sixth, Hendriks allowed Mike Aviles aboard with a leadoff single into left then, while he was in the process of getting Jose Iglesias to ground out, his catcher enabled Aviles to advance to third base via a passed ball. This cost the A's another run when Justin Upton took advantage with a sacrifice fly for an unearned run. Hendriks then threw a very good pitch sequence to former MVP and Batting Champion Miguel Cabrera but, having already crushed two home runs in the game, 'Big Mig' still managed to lash a low and away pitch into left field… he was seeing the baseball like a basketball! Liam polished off that inning with veteran slugger Victor Martinez flying out to left field. His pitching line of 1.1ip 2h 1r 0er 0bb 1k (8.38 ERA) was by no means a bad outing in the context of Oakland's 3-7 defeat at Comerica Park. Tyler Collins batted 0-4 (.100) after starting at centre field for the Tigers.

Centre fielder KEVIN KIERMAIER (Canberra Cavalry 2012) batted 1-4 (.241) with two RBIs coming via his third home run of the season that certainly propelled his Tampa Bay Rays to a 3-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles today. In the same game today MYCHAL GIVENS (Perth Heat 2012) pitched a solid 1.0ip 1h 0er 1bb 1k (2.70 ERA) for Baltimore. Yesterday Kiermaier batted 0-2 but he did manage to milk a walk during the Rays 2-0 shutout win over the O's.

Helping the New York Yankees to roll over the Texas Rangers 3-1 was DIDI GREGORIUS (Canberra Cavalry 2011) who batted 1-4 (.250) as the starting short stop.

24 APR 2016 - LIAM HENDRIKS ENJOYS MIXED FORTUNES v OLD CLUB!

It was a day of mixed fortunes for Aussie right hander LIAM HENDRIKS today when he struck out three across his two inning relief effort, but he also gave up a pair of runs on two hits. Liam came to the bump to begin the bottom of the sixth with his Oakland team already trailing 2-6 en-route to a 3-9 loss to his previous club the hard hitting Toronto Blue Jays. Hendriks was immediately under the pump when Kevin Pillar laced an automatic double to right field and he was moved over to third when Ezequiel Carrera grounded into a fielder's choice to the second baseman. It didn't matter a lot when Liam, perhaps by design, hit powerhouse Josh Donaldson with a pitch ahead of Jose Bautista's sacrifice fly that padded the lead for the hosts. He concluded that frame with Edwin Encarnacion grounding out on a fielder's choice to the third baseman. Returning for the bottom of the seventh the inning again started badly for our guy when star Troy Tulowitzki homered to straight away centre but, to his credit, Hendriks refused to buckle by striking out the side after that. In an impressive sequence he had Justin Smoak called out on strikes, then he fanned both Russell Martin and Ryan Goins. Again we make no apologies for the Aussie yet, it must be said, that he was thrown to the wolves to face the meat of the Blue Jays' lineup in what was already a runaway losing cause… in fact you might say that he did quite well under tough circumstances! His finishing line was 2.0ip 2h 2r 2er 0bb 3k (9.72 ERA).

MYCHAL GIVENS (Perth Heat 2012) pitched a more than useful 1.1ip 0h 0er 0bb 2k (3.00 ERA) for the Baltimore Orioles who topped the World Series Champion Kansas City Royals 7-3 today.

New York Yankees' short stop DIDI GREGORIUS (Canberra Cavalry 2011) batted 2-3 (.286) yesterday to help them overcome the Tampa Bay Rays 6-3.

Like "Old Man River", DAVID ROSS (MLB All-Stars 2001) again found a way to contribute offensively despite batting 0-2 (.250) for the Chicago Cubs during their 8-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds. Although he didn't register a hit, Ross still drove in a couple of runs via a sacrifice fly and a sacrifice ground out on a canny squeeze play.

BRANDON BARNES (Sydney Blue Sox 2012) did all that he could as a pinch hitter for the Colorado Rockies, helping them to overrun the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-5 yesterday. Barnes slugged a two RBI triple and he scored a run to take home a 1-1 (.250) stats line from the game.

Seasoned reliever BRANDON MAURER (Adelaide Bite 2011) recorded his third hold of the young season with a very tidy 1.0ip 0h 0er 0bb 2k (4.50 ERA) for the San Diego Padres who squeezed the St.Louis Cardinals 4-1 yesterday.

22 APR 2016 - LIAM HENDRIKS RELIEVES & DAVID ROSS HOMERS!
Here is an update of what some Aussies and former AMLB imports have been doing in the US major leagues:

Liam Hendriks

Mychal Givens

After a bit of a break Aussie star LIAM HENDRIKS was back on the hill today, but the lack of work lately may have left him with a bit of rust that didn't help him. Liam was called into action to pitch the bottom of the ninth in New Yankee Stadium with his Oakland Athletics team owning a useful 7-3 lead over the sputtering New York Yankees. In the non-save situation, Hendriks started well by striking out Brian McCann, but when former ABL import DIDI GREGORIUS (Canberra Cavalry 2011) and Jacoby Ellsbury rifled back-to-back singles up the middle, manager Bob Melvin was not prepared to let our man continue. He was left with the brief line of 0.1ip 2h 0er 0bb 1k (9.95 ERA) while the A's still ran out 7-3 winners. Gregorius batted 1-2 after coming off the bench as a pinch hitter in this game.

Veteran journeyman catcher DAVID ROSS (MLB All-Stars 2001) had one of his trademark "breakout" games offensively today with 2-4 (.278) with a walk, three runs scored and a run batted in. That RBI came via his first long ball of the season as part of the Chicago Cubs 16-0 slaughter of the Cincinnati Reds on the road today.

Star outfielder KEVIN KIERMAIER (Canberra Cavalry 2012) was just one of the majority to enjoy an unlikely slugfest at Fenway today when he batted 1-4 (.220) and he scored twice for the Tampa Bay Rays who outlasted the home-standing Boston Red Sox 12-8. Kiermaier also batted 2-4 yesterday in the Rays' 3-7 defeat at the hands of the 'Bosox'.

Converted infielder MYCHAL GIVENS (Perth Heat 2012) recorded his first win of the season yesterday with 1.0ip 1h 0er 1bb 1k for the Baltimore Orioles who overcame the Toronto Blue Jays 4-3 in ten innings. Givens record now stands at 1-0, 3.52 ERA.

20 APR 2016 - KEIRMAIER HOME RUN SINKS RED SOX!
Here is an update of what some Aussies and former AMLB imports have been doing in the US major leagues:

Kevin Kiermaier

Brandon Maurer

After struggling offensively for most of the early season so far, platinum glove outfielder KEVIN KIERMAIER (Canberra Cavalry 2012) picked a great time to find some fire in his stick as one of the heroes for the Tampa Bay Rays who got the better of the Boston Red Sox 3-0 in ten innings at Fenway Park. With complete rows of "goose eggs" on both lines of the box score going into extra innings, Kiermaier broke the ice with his deep shot over right field as the leadoff hitter in the top of the tenth. He batted 1-4 (.182) with the vitally important RBI via the long ball that broke the game open.

Major league short stop DIDI GREGORIUS (Canberra Cavalry 2011) could not do quite enough to save the New York Yankees from going down 2-3 to the Oakland Athletics in eleven innings. Didi batted 1-4 (.225) as the No.9 slot batter for the 'Bronx Bombers'.

MYCHAL GIVENS (Perth Heat 2012) was the last man on the hill for the Baltimore Orioles pitching 1.0ip 0h 0er 1bb 0k (4.05 ERA) while his team fell short 3-4 to the tough Toronto Blue Jays.

As we have often mentioned here, the somewhat recent pitching statistic of a "hold" can sometimes be a misleading indication of a positive outing. Despite collecting his second hold of the 2016 season, I suspect that former ABL import BRANDON MAURER (Adelaide Bite 2011) would not be overly impressed with his 1.0ip 2h 1er 0bb 1k (6.00 ERA) while pitching in relief for the San Diego Padres who nipped the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-4. I guess the most important thing for him was participating in a team victory.

17 APR 2016 - RECENT ABL IMPORTS AMONG THE MLB ACTION!
Here is an update of what some Aussies and former AMLB imports have been doing in the US major leagues:

David Ross
Evergreen catcher DAVID ROSS (MLB All-Stars 2001) again found ways to contribute offensively without actually recording a hit for the Chicago Cubs who defeated the Colorado Rockies 6-2. Ross batted 0-2 (.250) but he walked, scored a run and drove in another to contribute positively as usually. BRANDON BARNES (Sydney Blue Sox 2012) pinch hit with 0-1 (.333) for the 'Rox'. Barnes had a little more luck the day before when he batted 1-1 as a pinch hitter for the Rockies during their 6-1 win over the Chicago Cubs.

Converted infielder MYCHAL GIVENS (Perth Heat 2012) again survived without allowing an earned run while pitching in relief for the Baltimore Orioles who fell 4-8 to the dangerous Texas Rangers. He finished with the somewhat shaky pitching line of 0.2ip 2h 1r 0er 0bb 2k (4.76 ERA).

Former ABL pitcher BRANDON MAURER (Adelaide Bite 2011) copped a blown save while pitching for the San Diego Padres with 1.0ip 1h 1er 0bb 1k (5.40 ERA) during their 5-3 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

15 APR 2016 - TYLER COLLINS DELIVERS RBI DOUBLE FOR TIGERS!
Here is an update of what some Aussies and former AMLB imports have been doing in the US major leagues:

Tyler Collins
TYLER COLLINS (Sydney Blue Sox 2012) was given a start at centre field today with the Detroit Tigers and he played his part in their 7-4 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates by batting 1-4 (.250) with a run batted in via his seventh inning RBI double.

Former ABL pitcher BRANDON MAURER (Adelaide Bite 2011) walked the tightrope of issuing a pair of walks to escape with a clean 1.0ip 0h 0er 2bb 1k (4.50 ERA) for the San Diego Padres who were blanked 0-3 by the Philadelphia Phillies.

14 APR 2016 - LIAM HENDRIKS BOUNCES BACK WELL v ANGELS!
Here is an update of what some Aussies and former AMLB imports have been doing in the US major leagues:

Liam Hendriks
Unfortunately our one and only Aussie major leaguer LIAM HENDRIKS had a rough day on the diamond today for the Oakland Athletics when he struggled to contain a rampant Los Angeles Angels in a 1-5 loss this morning. Liam battled to get outs with a pitching line of 0.1ip 4h 2r 2er 0bb 0k (10.50 ERA). Taking over for the top of the ninth with his team already 1-3 down, Hendriks began well with Yunel Escobar flying out to right field on just two pitches but, for the second time this week, he was then confronted by a succession of singles from the heart of the 'Halos' lineup… not all of which were hit hard! The rot set in after Craig Gentry rather fortunately reached on an infield single, followed by single to left by budding superstar Mike Trout. Veteran slugger Albert Pujols followed with a two RBI single up the middle following a wild pitch that advanced the runners. C.J Cron then looped a bleeder into shallow centre to bring out the hook.

DIDI GREGORIUS (Canberra Cavalry 2011) played his part as the starting short sop for the New York Yankees who sneaked past the Toronto Blue Jays 3-2 yesterday.

Helping the Tampa Bay Rays to top the Cleveland Indians 5-1 was star outfielder KEVIN KIERMAIER (Canberra Cavalry 2012) who batted 0-1 (.211), but he walked, was hit by a pitch, stole a base and scored a run on an otherwise busy offensive day.

The inherent up and down nature of relief pitching success was once again in evidence for Australia's LIAM HENDRIKS who bounced back pretty well from a hard-hit outing last time with a much more effective one for the Oakland Athletics who still lowered their colours to the visiting Los Angeles Angels 1-4. Liam closed out the game for Oakland with 2.0ip 3h 1r 1er 0bb 1k (7.94 ERA) that kept his team within range of late comeback rally. With his team already trailing 0-3 coming into the top of the eighth, he was immediately greeted by future Hall Of Famer Albert Pujols who punched one back up the middle for a leadoff single. Liam then got Kole Calhoun to line out to left and C.J Cron to ground one back to the mound before Andrelton Simmons drove in Pujols with his RBI single to right. The innings went no further when Carlos Perez grounded out to the second baseman. Hendriks then posted a neat top of the ninth after veteran Cliff Pennington led off with a single to left. That runner was erased by a Yunel Escobar's double play ground ball to the second baseman, followed by an inning ending strike out of Craig Gentry.

ABL import pitcher BRANDON MAURER (Adelaide Bite 2011) took his first hold of the season with a tidy 1.0ip 0h 0er 0bb 1k (6.00 ERA) for the San Diego Padres who squeezed past the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 in a tight one. The day before Maurer found the going tough with a shaky 1.0ip 3h 2er 2bb 1k (9.00 ERA) for the Padres at the bitter end of their 3-6 defeat at the hands of the Colorado Rockies.

MYCHAL GIVENS (Perth Heat 2012) pitched a decisive relief outing of 1.1ip 1h 0er 1bb 4k (6.23 ERA) for the Baltimore Orioles who snatched a 9-7 win over the Boston Red Sox in their home opener at Fenway Park.

10 APR 2016 - DIDI GREGORIUS DOING HIS JOB FOR YANKEES!
Here is an update of what some Aussies and former AMLB imports have been doing in the US major leagues:

Didi Gregorius
Short stop DIDI GREGORIUS (Canberra Cavalry 2011) continues to establish himself as a somewhat worthy successor for Yankee legend Derek Jeeter with his latest 1-4 (.333) plus two RBIs for the New York Yankees who rolled over the Detroit Tigers 8-4 today.

Veteran backup catcher DAVID ROSS (MLB All-Stars 2001) was back starting behind the dish today with 'Cubbies' right hander Jason Hammell on the mound. As well as doing his job defensively, Ross batted 0-3, but he did milk a walk and scored a run for the Chicago Cubs during their narrow 2-3 defeat at the hands of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

  8 APR 2016 - LIAM HENDRIKS ROUGHED-UP BY CHISOX!
Here is an update of what some Aussies and former AMLB imports have been doing in the US major leagues:

Liam Hendriks

Mychal Givens

The perennial roller-coaster that we know as baseball success unfortunately reared its ugly head for Aussie star LIAM HENDRIKS today. After his terrific effort on debut for the Oakland Athletics, Liam ran into an ambush today while pitching in relief against the re-tooled Chicago White Sox. His ugly looking line was 1.0ip 6h 4r 4er 0bb 1k (9.82 ERA) as the A's were overrun by the Chisox 1-6 at Oakland Colliseum. With his team already trailing 0-2 in the top of the ninth Hendriks was unable to keep the damage there when Avisail Garcia led off the eventual carnage with a single up the middle. He struck out J.B Shuck, but five successive singles was like the proverbial Chinese water torture as Brett Lowrie, Dioner Navarro, Tyler Saladino, Adam Eaton and Melky Cabrera all poked the ball into play. A sacrifice fly by Jose Abreu added another run before Todd Frazier finally grounded out to end the suffering. No excuses for our man today, but he was really on a hiding to nothing in these circumstances.

DIDI GREGORIUS (Canberra Cavalry 2011) batted 1-3 (.455) with a walk and a run scored for the New York Yankees who toppled the Houston Astros 8-5 at Yankee Stadium today. Gregorius also batted 3-5 in the Yankees 16-6 blowout win over the 'Stros yesterday as he enjoys a fine start to the 2016 season.

While playing two outfield positions during the game Colorado Rockies utility man BRANDON BARNES (Sydney Blue Sox 2012) batted a tidy 2-3 (.667) to help his team to edge the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-3.

Converted infielder MYCHAL GIVENS (Perth Heat 2012) earned his second hold of the new season with 0.2ip 2h 1er 0bb 1k (13.50 ERA) for the Baltimore Orioleswho double the Minnesota Twins 4-2.

6 APR 2016 - LIAM HENDRIKS SUPERB IN OAKLAND DEBUT!
Here is an update of what some Aussies and former AMLB imports have been doing in the US major leagues:

Liam Hendriks

Brandon Maurer

Australian baseball flag bearer LIAM HENDRIKS started his new season with his new club in very positive style with 2.2ip 0h 0er 0bb 2k (0.00 ERA) for the Oakland Athletics who couldn't find quite enough offence to prevent a 4-5 home defeat by the Chicago White Sox. Liam took over in a tough spot during the top of the sixth with his team trailing 2-4 and he definitely gave them a chance to rally back. He began superbly by inducing a huge inning ending double play with former All Star Jimmy Rollins grounding to the second baseman. He then steamed into the top of the seventh by striking out Jose Abreu and Home Run Derby star Todd Frazier before polishing off his 1-2-3 inning with Melky Cabrera grounding out to the third baseman. He posted another clean inning in the top of the eighth with Avisail Garcia grounding out, Brett Lowrie popping out and Alex Avila fouling out. It was the sort of extended relief outing that Hendriks has in his armoury and why he offers such a versatile option to any club.

It didn't take long for former ABL alumni DIDI GREGORIUS (Canberra Cavalry 2011) to get his home run tally started when he "went yard" for the New York Yankees in their season opener at Yankee Stadium. Didi batted 1-3 (.333) with the one RBI that was not enough to get the better of the Houston Astros who prevailed 5-3 in this one.

KEVIN KIERMAIER (Canberra Cavalry 2012) did not manage a hit with 0-2 (.444) but he did score a key run for the Tampa Bay Rays who edged the Toronto Blue Jays 3-2.

Former import pitcher BRANDON MAURER (Adelaide Bite 2011) pitched a strong 1.0ip 0h 0er 0bb 2k (0.00 ERA) with eight of 13 pitches thrown for strikes in relief for the San Diego Padres who were blanked 0-3 by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

5 APR 2016 - KEVIN KIERMAIER BATS 3-3 IN LOSS TO TORONTO!
Here is an update of what some Aussies and former AMLB imports have been doing in the US major leagues:

Kevin Kiermaier
KEVIN KIERMAIER (Canberra Cavalry 2012) is off to a blazing start to the 2016 season after batting a brilliant 3-3 (.571) for the Tampa Bay Rays with a walk and a run batted in in the second game of the new season. However, not even his terrific effort could prevent his Rays from falling 3-5 to the Toronto Blue Jays who dealt them a second straight home loss to open the season. The starting centre fielder batted in the #8 slot and he may be bidding to move up nearer the top of the lineup card.

Another former ABL import, BRANDON BARNES (Sydney Blue Sox 2012), was used as a pinch hitter with 0-0 (.000) for the Colorado Rockies who doubled the Arizona Diamondbacks 10-5.

Brandon Barnes
4 APR 2016 - KEVIN KIERMAIER IN THE THICK OF OPENING DAY ACTION!
Here is an update of what some Aussies and former AMLB imports have been doing in the US major leagues:

Kevin Kiermaier
2015 Platinum Glove winner KEVIN KIERMAIER (Canberra Cavalry 2012) was certainly in the thick of the action for the Tampa Bay Rays during their opening day 3-5 home defeat by the Toronto Blue Jays.

Kiermaier batted a handy 1-4 (.250) and he drove in a consolation run for the Rays. However, it was not all positive for him in the bottom of the fourth when his team was trailing 1-3 at the time. Kiermaier reached second base on a throwing error with two out in the inning before he was inexplicably thrown out while trying to steal third base.

Even though it's very early in the new season it looks like he is ready to be a key component and a spark-plug for Tampa once again.
