US PRO PLAYERS
OF THE WEEK

Welcome to our another of our features that is designed as an additional enhancement to our updated statistical information about Australian players who fly our flag in the US Professional Leagues. Time permitting, we hope to track the performances of players for the previous week (or five or six days) and to make our assessment for 'Flintoff & Dunn's US PRO PLAYER OF THE WEEK'. We will add this to our 'PRO PLAYERS OF THE YEAR' that we have published at the end of previous seasons...
Like everything we do, we certainly don't expect that everyone will agree with our assessments from week to week and we don't pretend to know every intimate event or situation that might affect a given player from time to time. Our assessment will be based purely on the statistics produced from the past week with no particular emphasis on at what level the performance has been achieved.
In any case, we will be happy if this effort sparks interest and debate for Australia's baseball community and we will always be happy to hear what you think!

'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 2 SEPT 2013

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

As the US professional leagues near their conclusions, we are still seeing some top young Aussie players determined to finish their seasons on an upward beat. This week we couldn't reasonably split three pitchers with remarkably similar statistics, even though only one of those recorded a win while the other pair were saddled with losses. We also threw in one hitter who has enjoyed a very good season overall. Minnesota Twins major leaguer LIAM HENDRIKS was the one winning pitcher with his terrific six inning start that saw only one earned run allowed. Although they took losses, somewhat due to the unearned runs in their starts, Detroit's 'AA' starter WARWICK SAUPOLD and Minnesota's 'A' level starter TIM ATHERTON also allowed just one earned run from six solid innings of work.

Joining them as a joint Pro Player of the Week is Tampa Bay's DARRYL GEORGE who batted 9-28 (.321) with four doubles for a .464 slugging percentage. On the batting side of the ball, we could not fit Minnesota Rookie-baller RORY RHODES due to his too few twelve at bats, yet his six hits included two doubles and a home run for a monster .917 slugging percentage.

He will receive an "Honourable Mention" along with pitchers JOHN HUSSEY and DANIEL McGRATH. San Diego's Hussey earned a win from his relatively low three innings of scoreless pitching. Young Red Sox Rookie McGrath capped off his fine debut season with a six inning winning start where he struck out seven while allowing three runs.

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 26 AUGUST 2013

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

This week presented us with a colloquial "no brainer" in terms of our Pro Player of the Week with one absolutely stunning performance from Minnesota's young Rookie League prodigy LEWIS THORPE who already looks capable of going a very long way in the game. In two outings for the GCL Twins this past week he recorded one win, and allowed just one hit across his total of 7.1 innings with - wait for it - FIFTEEN strike outs and only one walk.

The only player seriously capable of challenging him was our regular contender LIAM HENDRIKS whose magnificent outing for the Twins at 'AAA' Rochester was unfortunately "corrupted" a tad with a rocky start for Minnesota's major league team on the weekend. In a slight departure from our normal considerations, we simply couldn't exclude his 'AAA' winning start that comprised eight scoreless innings with 8/0 strikeouts versus walks - it almost seems unjust that he will get just an "Honourable Mention" for the week. Behind Thorpe for another "Honourable Mention" is fellow Victorian Rookie League pitcher SAM GIBBONS who pitched five scoreless innings for his winning start. Also, we will not penalise another regular nominee JAMES BERESFORD because he is in a platoon situation and had limited plate appearances with Minnesota's 'AAA' Rochester. In spite of this Beresford pumped his average back above the .300 plateau by hitting 5-14 (.357) over the last few days.

It is a small but quite impressive list on this occasion, "swept" by the Minnesota club, as you will see below...

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 19 AUGUST 2013

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

It was very much a case of quality over quantity this past week for Australian professionals in the US leagues.
Although the number of serious contenders for our nominations were not as prevalent compared with other weeks, those that we had to consider were very, very good indeed. To firstly mention a few notable efforts that couldn't quite qualify for nominations, we will start with our recent major leaguer TRAVIS BLACKLEY who pitched three scoreless innings for his new club the Rangers' 'AAA' Round Rock Express. Not for the first time this season Detroit starting pitcher WARWICK SAUPOLD mixed one rough start with one fine winning start where he gave up just one run over six innings. RYAN ROWLAND-SMITH took his season record to a terrific 7-0, 1.60ERA at Boston's 'AAA' Pawtucket Red Sox. Phillies' short-season 'A' pitcher JOSH GUYER also collected a win for his efforts last week.

Moving ahead to our "Honourable Mentions" we will once again comment that a couple of these nominations could have easily been in line for our major award on other occasions when the standard was not as strong. Take for example Minnesota starting pitcher SAM GIBBONS who earned a win with his six inning start that saw just one run allowed - he walked none and struck out six for the GCL Twins. It is also hard to imagine how Tampa Bay's 'A-ss' hitter DARRYL GEORGE could miss out after batting 7-19 (.368) for the week with Hudson Valley. Even though he struck out eleven times for the week, we decided to add Minnesota's 'Advanced Rookie' RORY RHODES who batted 7-24 (.292) plus four walks for a .393 on base percentage.

The two players who were quite outstanding this week were Minnesota pitcher TIM ATHERTON and Texas' Rookie outfielder TODD McDONALD. McDonald batted a mighty 11-21 (.524) with four walks that gave him a .600 on base percentage. Atherton produced one of the finest pitching performances that we can remember for the 'A' Cedar Rapids Kernels by striking out ELEVEN and walking none across an eight inning start where the only two runs allowed were unearned - how unfortunate was he to take a no-decision from this two-hitter!

'Flintoff & Dunn' selected these players for our top award this week:

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 12 AUGUST 2013

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

Young Aussie pitchers were very much to the fore this past week to dominate our Pro Player of the Week awards this time. Just to mention a couple of batters who went deep this week we must recognise RYAN BATTAGLIA, who went 3-5 with a double and a home run, along with ALLAN de SAN MIGUEL who also left the yard. However, neither of them had sufficient at bats to come into consideration for a nomination.

I'm sure 'Flintoff & Dunn' join with all Australian baseball fans with our delight that WA's LIAM HENDRIKS made a triumphant return to the major leagues this week and he was not far off grabbing a share of primary PPOW award with an outstanding start that brought him a no-decision, but a great win for the Minnesota Twins. He will get an "Honourable Mention", as will his pitching club mate TIM ATHERTON who took a win with his five inning start that saw just two runs scored. Other "Honourable Mentions" went to hitters STEFAN WELCH and DARRYL GEORGE. Red Sox 'AA' hitter Welch batted "just" the neat .300 but, most impressively, his 6-20 included eleven runs scored, a double and two long balls and eight walks - his .650 slugging percentage and .500 on base percentage had him very much in contention for our main award too. Tampa Bay's short-season 'A' baller George also batted 6-20, including a triple.

Just elevated above them we selected three young Victorian starting pitchers who continue to show tremendous promise for the future. Probably best among them, for the second week running, was Twins' starter LEWIS THORPE who struck out eight across his five innings where only two unearned runs crossed the plate. In a similar performance Boston lefty DANIEL McGRATH also took a win with five "no hit" innings where he struck out six and walked none. A year advanced from them is Minnesota's SAM GIBBONS who pitched two starts for a win with a total of eight innings for just one run and seven strike outs. Nice work by those young fellows, and the others mentioned.

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 5 AUGUST 2013

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

Although there were some very fine efforts form Aussie baseball professionals this past week, we can't honestly say that we were overwhelmed with difficulty in making our nominations. To get straight to the point, we just felt that Minnesota's young Rookie League prodigy LEWIS THORPE stood out for our primary award with his second impressive winning start in his debut season. Thorpe hurled five shutout innings, walked none, and struck out four to take our Pro Player of the Week.

Most of our "Honourable Mentions" had relatively small samples, yet we considered them really worthy of credit. LA Angels' 'AAA' outfielder TRENT OELTJEN batted 7-14 (.500) with three doubles for a .714 slugging percentage. Son of former ABL great Phil Dale, RYAN DALE, has been steadily improving in his debut season with Kansas City's Rookie League AZL Royals and he continued this with 5-13 (.385) last week. To round off the batters, Minnesota 'AAA' star JAMES BERESFORD has received plenty of plaudits already this season, but we could not ignore his latest 6-20 (.300) with a .364 on base percentage. Relief pitchers ANDREW RUSSELL and SAM HOLLAND both had the strike outs working for them to produce a scoreless week of pitching. Atlanta's 'AAA' ace Russell pitched 3.2 scoreless innings with 5/0 strikeouts versus walks - we hear that he has earned a well deserved promotion back to 'AAA' Gwinnett. Padres' Rookie Holland pitched three separate scoreless innings with a 4/0 strikeouts to walks ratio.

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 29 JULY 2013

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

For those who felt that we spread our primary award too widely last week, you'll be pleased to find that we have identified just one standout winner this week. Colorado's 'High A' outfielder DAVID KANDILAS stood out from some other very good performers with his 9-20 (.450) effort to take our Pro Player of the Week.

We still think that AROOS infielder STEFAN WELCH is playing below his status, yet we do not overlook his 7-20 (.350) for Boston's 'High A' Salem Red Sox. We would usually not expect to include 'AAA' star TRENT OELTJEN based on his modest .250 batting average for the week, however, his four hits came in the shape of three doubles and a homer for a .625 slugging percentage to sneak in for "Honourable Mention". Pitching wise, Detroit's WARWICK SAUPOLD mixed a superb scoreless start with another that saw six runs allowed - to once again demonstrate the vagaries of win/loss records, he still recorded two wins as a most positive outcome. His WA compatriot LIAM HENDRIKS also picked up another win with a quality 7.2 inning start where he, quite typically, walked none and struck out five. Our final nomination for "Honourable Mention" goes to young Minnesota Rookie pitcher SAM GIBBONS who pitched four innings and the only run he allowed was unearned.

A small mention also goes to Rookie LOGAN WADE who pounded a home run this week for the GCL Twins.

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 22 JULY 2013

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

My memory may be lacking here, but it certainly feels that I cannot remember such a number of extremely high quality performances from our Aussie professionals, causing us plenty of discussion this week. Unfortunately, not for the first time, some players will have to miss our major award whereas they were good enough to get a top nomination on most other occasions. In the end we just couldn't refine our selections any further than the five we have selected to share our Pro Player of the Week this time.

Two young pitchers JACKSON LODGE and JOSH WARNER both excelled with scoreless starts, while Lodge recorded a win and Warner took a no-decision. Joining them from our pitching ranks is TIM ATHERTON who allowed just one run while taking a loss, but he struck out NINE across his seven innings - wins and losses can be a false reading for pitchers!

Sharing our PPOW award were two seasoned hitters who each pounded slugging percentages of 1.000 for the week. Angles' outfielder TRENT OELTJEN batted 6-12 (.500) with three doubles and a homer among them. Baltimore catcher ALLAN de SAN MIGUEL batted 5-13 (.385) including two doubles and two long balls to round off our main awards.

Unlucky to take just an "Honourable Mention" were hitters STEFAN WELCH (.389), DARRYL GEORGE (.375) and MIKE WALKER (.294). Atlanta's 'AA' reliever ANDREW RUSSELL pitched 3.1 innings from two outings without allowing an earned run to also receive another nomination.

One quick mention for Boston's teenage starting pitcher DANIEL McGRATH who has taken barely a month in Rookie ball to earn promotion to their short-season 'A' team Lowell Spinners.

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 15 JULY 2013

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

WOW! There were some really great performances by Australian baseball professionals in the US this past week. However, before we get into those and our awards, 'Flintoff & Dunn' really appreciate the bulk of positive feedback that we receive relating to our Pro Player of the Week, but there is something that we might need to explain again for some who may have more recently started following us. We have received a few e-mails suggesting that our awards have not given proper consideration of what level players may be playing at with respect to their performances. Well, we did explain right back when we began these awards that we had decided to ignore the various playing levels, otherwise it would be virtually impossible for a Rookie League player to receive our recognition. Of course we fully realise the achievement and the quality of players at the higher levels - if some don't like the way we have chosen to make our selections we can only apologise.

This explanation is pertinent again this week because we have chosen STEFAN WELCH for a share of our primary award, while his contemporary AROOS team mate JAMES BERESFORD has just, somewhat unluckily, missed out on yet another nomination for our top award. Of course we acknowledge that Beresford has batted .391 at 'AAA' level, whereas Welch batted .542 at 'High-A' level, which is probably below his established standard. That's just the way it goes!

Joining Welch for our Pro Player of the Week nominations this week are pitchers LIAM HENDRIKS, PETER MOYLAN and TIM ATHERTON. Hendriks hurled a sublime eight inning winning start for Minnesota's 'AAA' Rochester where he struck out six and allowed just four base runners. Moylan recorded two wins while pitching five shutout innings from three outings with the Dodgers' 'AAA' Albuquerque. Atherton earned another win with his six inning start saw just one earned run scored against his 'A' level Cedar Rapids Kernels.

Coming in behind Beresford for "Honourable Mention" is Rookie League pitcher LEWIS THORPE who struck out five during his 3.2 inning start for the GCL Twins. COREY ADAMSON just made the cut for another mention by batting 6-18 (.333) for San Diego's Fort Wayne Tin Caps at 'A' level.

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 8 JULY 2013

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

We're glad to report that there were plenty of players to consider for mention and nomination this week as our Aussie boys continue to wave the flag for "down under baseball" in the old US of A. We won't provide a nomination for our established  major league relievers GRANT BALFOUR and TRAVIS BLACKLEY because they pitched just 2.2 innings each for the week. However they were worthy of mention with Balfour recording another three saves and Blackley taking a win during the week. We will also mention young SA rookie JACKSON LODGE who earned a solid win while just missing a nomination.

Three hitters receive "Honourable Mention", starting with San Diego's COREY ADAMSON who batted 8-24 (.333) including three triples for a .583 slugging percentage. Rays' short-season 'A' leaguer DARRYL GEORGE gets another mention for batting 7-18 (.389) along with Twins' rookie LOGAN WADE, who we couldn't by-pass even with a tiny sample of nine at bats. Wade batted 4-9 (.444), but he was just a double short of "hitting for the cycle" with a triple and a home run coming with a single in the same game.

Other "Honourable Mentions" go to Minnesota pitchers TIM ATHERTON and SAM GIBBONS who each pitched five inning for the week. Atherton allowed one run while striking out five, and rookie leaguer Gibbons pitched five scoreless inning from two outings. We will also give a nomination to Padres' rookie SAM HOLLAND who collected a save from 3.1 scoreless innings.

Our primary awards for this week go to Minnesota team mates JAMES BERESFORD and LIAM HENDRIKS who starred on opposite sides of the ball for their 'AAA' Rochester Red Wings. Hendriks is rolling nicely back into gear since his recovery from injury and he was back near his best last outing with a six inning scoreless start. Beresford has been in terrific form this season and he is gradually making his presence felt at 'AAA' level since his recent promotion - he batted a torrid 7-15 (.467) with a .529 on base percentage.

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 1 JULY 2013

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

Fairly strong competition for our awards again this week with a couple of our most promising young rookie pitchers getting off to flying starts in their professional careers. Before we get into our award nominations we just want to make a brief mention of our national team catcher MATT KENNELLY who has found another home with the Cincinnati Reds organisation where he has taken up again at 'AA' level - he got off to a hot start with his new club with a four-hit game recently. Former major leaguer TRENT OELTJEN has just had a ten-plus game hitting streak broken at 'AAA' level with the LA Angels.

To begin with the "Honourable Mentions" we are delighted to note that Australia's last new major leaguer LIAM HENDRIKS is on a gradual improvement curve since returning to action from the disabled list with Minnesota's 'AAA' Rochester. He took a loss in his most recent outing, but he allowed only two runs from a strong eight inning quality start. We will also note young rookie pitcher DEAN ALDRIDGE who pitched three scoreless innings in his professional debut with the GCL Tigers. Colorado's 'High-A' prospect DAVID KANDILAS was a touch unfortunate to miss a share of the primary award after batting 7-20 (.350) for the Modesto Nuts. Tampa Bay's DARRYL GEORGE continues to run hot at the start of this new season with another 6-19 (.316) this past week.

We selected three Victorian pitchers who pitched four or more scoreless innings for our PRO PLAYER OF THE WEEK and the younger two of those posted terrific strikeout numbers. Atlanta's national team star ANDREW RUSSELL had three scoreless outings for their 'AA' Mississippi across five innings with a save. Teenage lefties DANIEL McGRATH and LEWIS THORPE both struck out eight across five and four scoreless innings respectively.

'Flintoff & Dunn' selected these players for our top award this week:

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 24 JUNE 2013

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

With the Rookie leagues just getting underway our frame of reference has been expanded and, happily, there were a couple of new boys featuring among our nominations this week. While it was not too hard to select the players worthy of a nomination this week, it was much harder to separate who would receive our primary award and who would just miss out for "Honourable Mention". Quite truthfully, on another occasion these players may all have been in line for a PRO PLAYER OF THE WEEK Award.

In the end we can only apologise to Colorado Rookie ROBBIE PERKINS who narrowly missed out with his smallish sample of 3-10 (.300) that included a home run. Hopefully he will win our major award in the future.

We just couldn't exclude a pair of hitters and a pair of pitchers to share our PPOW this week. Former major leaguer TRENT OELTJEN starred again for the Angels' Salt Lake Bees in 'AAA' with 7-20 (.350) and two home runs for a .700 slugging percentage. He was joined by Tampa Bay short-season 'A' league hitter DARRYL GEORGE who batted 6-17 (.353) plus four walks for a .476 on base percentage. Highly rated young rookie left-hander DANIEL McGRATH made a terrific debut start with the GCL Red Sox that saw just one run allowed across five innings, with six strike outs. Minnesota's 'A' level starter TIM ATHERTON must surely be in line for promotion with his scoreless four inning start that brought him a win.

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 17 JUNE 2013

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

The adjudication of our nominations this week was not a difficult matter. Two players really stood out for our primary award and, with not many other candidates, we selected two pitchers for "Honourable Mention".

To start with those, Boston's 'AAA' pitcher RYAN ROWLAND-SMITH receives a mention on this occasion even though his 2.2 scoreless innings would usually be too small a sample size. Similarly, Altanta's 'AA' reliever ANDREW RUSSELL would usually be discounted because of the three runs he allowed in his latest rather unfortunate outing, but we could not overlook the two wins he posted for the week before that.

The two players who stood out like a beacon for our PRO PLAYER OF THE WEEK this time were Boston's STEFAN WELCH and Houston pitcher CAMERON LAMB. Welch began this season in 'AA' ball with the Pittsburgh Pirates, but he has really come alive again lately since joining Boston's 'High A' Salem Red Sox. He batted a torrid 9-23 (.429) this past week with four doubles. Cameron Lamb is finding his feet since his promotion to the Astros' 'High A' Lancaster with five innings of "no hit" relief pitching.

'Flintoff & Dunn' selected this player for our top award this week:

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 10 JUNE 2013

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

Slim pickings for our award nominations this week, but this gives us some free space to recognise and congratulate two Aussie players who have earned professional promotions. First and foremost is Minnesota's JAMES BERESFORD who was finally rewarded for his outstanding form both offensively and defensively this season. Our brilliant AROOS short stop came off a strong effort at the 2013 World Baseball Classic to dominate at 'AA' level while also dominating our PPOW Awards. He has now advanced to their 'AAA' Rochester Red Wings... just one short step from 'The Show'. Also recently promoted was WA pitcher CAMERON LAMB who rose from Houston's 'A' Quad City to their 'Advanced A' Lancaster.

Back to our award nominations, it really didn't require any think music for us to select young San Diego outfielder COREY ADAMSON for our primary PRO PLAYER OF THE WEEK Award after he batted a mighty 11-28 (.393) for their 'A' team Fort Wayne Tin Caps.

The only other player who attracted our attention for "Honourable Mention" was recently adopted Aussie born player MIKE WALKER who belted two home runs for Milwaukee's 'AA' Huntsville. His .261 average may not have set the world on fire, yet his .565 slugging percentage put him in our spotlight. For those who have questioned our inclusion of players like Walker (and Clayton Tanner recently), 'Flintoff & Dunn' cannot ignore players who have represented Australia in international competition and who have qualified as Australians under the rules set down for those events. Unlike some players who have been able to represent other national teams, like Italy, at least these guys were born in Australia!

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 3 JUNE 2013

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

Before we get into our PPOW nominations this week 'Flintoff & Dunn' is delighted to congratulate seasoned Aussie reliever PETER MOYLAN for seeing through a long and arduous journey back to the major leagues after long injury recovery over recent years. Pete was back pitching in the big leagues with the famous LA Dodgers this week.

To start with our "Honourable Mentions" this time we felt that RYAN ROWLAND-SMITH and TIM ATHERTON were just below the amount of innings to challenge for our primary award, even though they both performed well for their teams when asked. Minnesota infielder JAMES BERESFORD has really dominated our awards this season and, although not quite as hot as he has been, his .292 average for the past week should not be completely ignored.

The two pitchers that we separated from them as joint winners of our Pro Player of the Week this time were major league closer GRANT BALFOUR and 'AA" starter WARWICK SAUPOLD. Balfour continued his remarkable run of successful saves with another three from five outings while allowing just one home run this past week. Detroit starter Saupold also allowed just the one run across a sterling seven inning outing for a no-decision this week.

'Flintoff & Dunn' selected these players for our top award this week:

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 27 MAY 2013

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

To start from the top this time, Victoria's star middle infielder JAMES BERESFORD has recently bounced back from a short stint on the disabled list to return to the same ultra-consistent hitting form that saw him win our Pro Player of the Week award after each of the first three weeks of this season. In a quite astounding run of form Beresford has again put together a hitting sequence that numbers nine of his last ten appearances and, wait for it, 18 out of his last 20 games! Moreover he has raked six multi-hit games from his last ten. There can be no doubt about his selection for the fourth time this season after batting 11-28 (.393) for this past week with Minnesota's 'AA' New Britain. This cannot continue to go unnoticed...

For "Honourable Mention" this week we have three high level pitchers who did not allow an earned run for the week, plus another former major league hitter. LA Angels' outfielder TRENT OELTJEN has featured often among these awards over the years, but rarely with a modest batting average of .261 for the week. What we could not ignore was Trent's power and run production - this week his six hits included another two home run game, two doubles and seven RBIs. Recent major league pitchers PETER MOYLAN and RYAN ROWLAND-SMITH both recorded saves, while Atlanta's ANDREW RUSSELL took a win and a loss while lowering his own ERA at 'AA' level.

Not quite getting a nomination this week were TIM ATHERTON, who recorded a win with just too few total innings and starting pitcher WARWICK SAUPOLD, who bounced back from a rare poor start to begin the week to finish with another superb win - including that rare hard-hit start his 4-1, 2.55ERA record says plenty. Recently "adopted" Aussie born player MIKE RUSSELL batted a very good .286 for the week with four walks that gave him a .444 on base percentage.

Although he did not have a large enough sample of innings, we must give a very special mention to Australia's major league closer GRANT BALFOUR who has converted saves from his last four outings and seven of his last eight!

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 20 MAY 2013

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

For the second week running we didn't have too many genuine contenders for our nominations this week, but there were a few players who produced notes of interest for us. Minnesota Twins' 'AA' infielder JAMES BERESFORD returned from a short stay on the disabled list to pick up where he had left off. He did not have sufficient plate appearances for a nomination this week, but we noted that he has amassed 13 hits from his last ten games, has failed to hit in only one of those and he currently enjoys an injury interrupted six game hitting streak. Minnesota's 'A' level pitcher TIM ATHERTON took a loss, yet he quite amazing struck out nine opponents across his 3.2 innings. Angels' 'AAA' outfielder TRENT OELTJEN homered again this week even though he is a bit down on his usual high batting average.

Due to the relative lack of other contenders, we have elected to include three pitchers for "Honourable Mention" while ignoring the fact that they would usually be overlooked for having pitched too few innings. Major leaguers GRANT BALFOUR and TRAVIS BLACKLEY deserve some recognition, as does ANDREW RUSSELL who has hit back after finding himself unluckily sent down to 'AA' after performing well at 'AAA' to start this season. Russell collected a neat win, while Balfour has converted five saves from his last six outings.

A pair of Western Australians have been selected for our primary award this week. Pitcher WARWICK SAUPOLD earned his second successive PPOW award with his second straight impressive win for Detroit's 'AA' Erie Seawolves. He is joined by seasoned catcher ALLAN de SAN MIGUEL who batted 7-18 (.389) as he demonstrates his quality at a level probably below his credentials with Baltimore's 'High A' team Frederick Keys. Still, you can only do what you can wherever you are directed to play in professional baseball.

'Flintoff & Dunn' selected this player for our top award this week:

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 13 MAY 2013

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

We may have enjoyed an embarrassment of riches with the range of Australian players putting forth strong cases to be nominated for our awards this season, but not so this past week. For some reason, including a few notable stars currently on disabled lists, we only really considered three contenders.

Maybe because we don't have too many nominations to discuss we will spend a moment mentioning a few players who did not receive nominations this time. Former major leaguer TRENT OELTJEN had a huge two-homer game during the past week for the Angels' 'AAA' Salt Lake Bees. Minnesota's TIM ATHERTON recorded a win from one good relief outing at 'A' level. Comeback man JOHN HUSSEY earned promotion to 'High A' with the Padres this past week.

To be brutally honest the players we have nominated for "Honourable Mention" this week probably would have been overlooked on previous occasions this season. San Diego's COREY ADAMSON continues to be an emerging star with another solid week that saw him bat 7-23 (.304) that included three doubles. Quite obviously we were not really inclined to include seasoned catcher ALLAN de SAN MIGUEL who had only seven at bats for the week, yet we took account of the fact that his 3-7 included a home run, plus three walks, for a .636 on base percentage - OK, only this week!

Having said all that, we certainly don't make any apologies for our primary nomination that was clearly earned by WA starting pitcher WARWICK SAUPOLD who tossed a terrific winning start for Detroit's 'AA' Erie Seawolves. His winning start comprised 6.2 scoreless innings with six punch outs - very nice work Warwick!

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 6 MAY 2013

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

This week we could have quite easily decided not to split EIGHT players to award our PRO PLAYER(s) OF THE WEEK, however, we ultimately concluded that we would have to be very tough on three pitchers who performed superbly this past week. In the end our line of separation was to nominate those who were scoreless for the week, while providing "Honourable Mention" for the other unlucky three.

The very unlucky ones were LIAM HENDRIKS, PETER MOYLAN and JOHN HUSSEY. Hendriks made a high quality winning start for Minnesota's 'AAA' Rochester where he struck out five across his six inning stint. Moylan made four relief appearances for the Dodgers' 'AAA' Albuquerque that reaped him a win and a save. Hussey's two relief outings yielded just one run from his five innings of work with four strike outs included.

For the third straight week to start our PPOW season, we simply could not ignore the wonderfully consistent batting of Minnesota's 'AA' short stop JAMES BERESFORD who racked up a .375 average this week to follow even higher averages the previous two weeks. Although TRENT OELTJEN owned a slightly lower average with .346 for the Angels' 'AAA' team Salt Lake, we did not miss the three doubles, a triple and a home run that gave him a .654 slugging percentage for the week.

The three pitchers who boasted a scoreless week of pitching were major leaguers GRANT BALFOUR and TRAVIS BLACKLEY, as did recent major leaguer RYAN ROWLAND-SMITH. Balfour collected two saves from his 4.1 scoreless innings for the Oakland As with five punch outs. Blackley's four scoreless relief outings saw just one hit come from his four tidy innings. Rowland-Smith allowed just two hits from his total of five innings with Boston's 'AAA' Pawtucket Red Sox.

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 29 APRIL 2013

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

This week we had four players - two position players and two pitchers - that we would not split for our major award as our Aussie pros are again setting a high standard early in the 2013 US season.

To begin with those who missed out but will receive an "Honourable Mention" we are delighted to recognise the recent good form of our major league pitcher TRAVIS BLACKLEY who is hitting back hard after finding his career again in the balance when he was released by Oakland. Blackley seems to have found another home with the Houston Astros and he was one player who performed well for the struggling club that was swept in Boston. Former major leaguer RYAN ROWLAND-SMITH continues to do well for The Red Sox at 'AAA' level, yet he may have been fortunate to sneak in here with so few inning pitched for the week. At first glance you may be surprised to see Boston's BOSS MOANAROA among the nominations after batting 5-19, but when you include three doubles, a triple and six RBIs we couldn't omit him.

The four Australians to share our major award this week, we feel, each have compelling cases for PRO PLAYER OF THE WEEK. To start with the pitchers, Melbourne's JOHN HUSSEY has built upon his solid ABL campaign with a terrific start to his 2013 season with the San Diego Padres organisation. His two outings produced a win and no earned runs from 6.2 innings. Twins' reliever TIM ATHERTON had two stunning outings, even though he totalled just 4.1 scoreless innings - he earned one save and did not give up a hit while striking EIGHT and walking only one.

Although not as prodigious as last week, Minnesota's 'AA' star JAMES BERESFORD made it two-from-two this season with another strong week of hitting that saw him bat 7-18 for a .389 average. He was joined by his young World Baseball Classic team mate COREY ADAMSON who owned a lower average (.350), but two doubles and a home run gave him a big .600 slugging percentage.

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

Welcome back to 'Flintoff & Dunn's' PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK for the 2013 US professional season.

Already we have seen some pretty hot competition for our first award(s) of the season. There were a number of very good candidates for "Honourable Mention" but really just one absolute standout for our primary award.

With several relief pitchers to consider we decided to rule a line under a minimum of four innings pitched for the week and, to indicate how tough the competition was, our former major leaguer PETE MOYLAN just missed out because of one earned run allowed from his 4.0 innings. Another former major leaguer RYAN ROWLAND-SMITH earned a win while allowing juts two hits from his 4.0 scoreless innings to earn a nomination. Two of Ryan's Australian team mates from the 2013 World Baseball Classic joined him for mention - namely ANDREW RUSSELL and WARWICK SAUPOLD.
Side-armer Russell allowed a few too many hits and walks across his 4.0 innings, yet he refused to allow a run from his three outings. Saupold pitched a quality 6.0 inning start that saw just one run scored. TIM ATHERTON joined them with a nomination after earning a win when he allowed just one run from his 4.2 innings.

To wave the flag for the position players, a couple of our World Baseball Classic reps also deserved "Honourable Mention". ALLAN de SAN MIGUEL batted 6-16 (.375) with a pair of home runs for a mighty .750 slugging percentage and, on another occasion, he might have won our main award. Fellow West Aussie COREY ADAMSON didn't quite match him with 5-14 (.357) plus two stolen bases and a .500 on base percentage.

Head and shoulders above them and setting a cracking early pace for 2013 was our World Baseball Classic short stop JAMES BERESFORD who has responded once again by batting a monster 11-23 (.478) plus six walks for a huge .586 on base percentage. Beresford also drove in five runs for his team.

'Flintoff & Dunn' selected this player for our top award this week:
