US PRO PLAYERS
OF THE WEEK - 2014

Welcome to our another of our features that is designed as an additional enhancement to our updated statistical information about Australian players who fly our flag in the US Professional Leagues. Time permitting, we hope to track the performances of players for the previous week and to make our assessment for 'Flintoff & Dunn's US PRO PLAYER OF THE WEEK'.
Like everything we do, we certainly don't expect that everyone will agree with our assessments from week to week and we don't pretend to know every intimate event or situation that might affect a given player from time to time. Our assessment will be based purely on the statistics produced from the past week with no particular emphasis on at what level the performance has been achieved. In any case, we will be happy if this effort sparks interest and debate for Australia's baseball community and we will always be happy to hear what you think!

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 8 SEPTEMBER 2014

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

Admittedly the scope for these awards has diminished with some lower leagues already concluded, yet we still had three Aussie pitchers who caught our attention for what may be our final nominations for 2014.

Our Pro Player of the Week will be shared by WARWICK SAUPOLD and DANIEL McGRATH, who each pitched a winning start of six quality innings. Detroit's 'AAA' starter Saupold allowed just the one run, while Boston's 'A' league lefty allowed two from his six innings.

We will also provide an "Honourable Mention" for San Diego's 'AA' pitcher JOHN HUSSEY who took a win from his scoreless three inning outing.

'Flintoff & Dunn' selected these players for our top award this week:

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 1 SEPTEMBER 2014

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

As some of the lower minor leagues are coming to an end this season, it is great to see some of our Aussie boys still flying our flag proudly, especially some of those very familiar pitchers who continue to grab our headlines on this page.

Yet again first and foremost is the 'Wanneroo Wrecker' LIAM HENDRIKS who clearly earned another spot start in the major leagues, his first with new team Kansas City, and he grasped the opportunity with both hands. His brilliant seven inning start was the backbone of his team's win over Minnesota, even though he took a no-decision with just one run allowed in his final inning - In fact Liam had 14 outs into the fifth inning with a rare "Perfect Game" still intact!

We had to be quite tough on a few others who will receive "Honourable Mention", but one guy who will share our main award with Hendriks is LEWIS THORPE whose two combined starts comprised eight innings of pitching without an earned run scored - he walked a few too many (eight) but neutralised that with 12 strike outs.

The pitchers who will receive "Honourable Mention" are DAN McGRATH, SAM HOLLAND, SAM STREET and NICK HUTCHINGS who were each very good with fewer innings pitched than our major award winners. In addition, we will not penalise ZACH SHEPHERD who ran out of plate appearances at the end of his Rookie League season, yet his 4-10 (.400) included a home run, four runs scored and two RBIs, plus three walks (.700SLG% - .538OB%).

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 25 AUGUST 2014

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

American baseball aficionados refer to this time of the season as the "Dog Days of August" as the grind of a long season begins to take its physical and mental toll on weary players, yet this has not stopped many of our Aussie pros from maintaining very high standards over recent weeks.

Once ahead at the top of the tree was KC pitching ace LIAM HENDRIKS who supplied yet another brilliant winning start at 'AAA" Omaha with eight innings that yielded just one unearned run with seven strike outs. He was almost matched by Minnesota Rookie SAM GIBBONS who also recorded a win with seven innings of one-hit pitching with no earned runs and  eight strike outs. Although he didn't quite match that pair, we could not discount the strong no-decision produced by Detroit's 'AA' starter WARWICK SAUPOLD who allowed just the one earned run over seven innings. There may be some eyebrows raised by our inclusion of Boston's 'AA' infielder STEFAN WELCH who batted a relatively modest 5-19 (.263), but then how many times have we had one of our lads launch three home runs in a week, plus a double, to register a .789 slugging percentage? This quartet will share our Pro Player of the Week Award.

You will also note some terrific efforts that narrowly missed the major award among our "Honourable Mentions", perhaps most notably Astro's Rookie pitcher LACHLAN MADDEN who recorded a win and a save from his two scoreless relief outings, or JOSH GUYER who produced a five inning scoreless start. One player who could not qualify for a special mention after just one appearance for the week was Colorado outfielder DAVID KANDILAS who returned from the DL to hit 3-4 with a home run, a walk, a stolen base, five RBIs and three runs scored for 'AA' Tulsa -PHEW!

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 18 AUGUST 2014

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

Some of our Subscribers would no doubt have heard this too often over the years but, once again, we found it a very challenging task to separate our major award winners from the "Honourable Mentions". A bevy of pitchers had their hands in the air for nominations and, although we will mention all of those that we identified, we are by no means convinced about how we have rated some ahead of others.

In the end we opted to elevate two of those pitchers for their scoreless efforts from at least four innings pitched. Maybe the best of those was San Diego's 'Short Season - A' right hander SAM HOLLAND who did not allow a hit across his four innings of scoreless work - I guess we just would have preferred another inning or two to make his selection easier. Joining him for our PPOW award is Minnesota's Rookie league righty JOSH GUYER who pitched five scoreless innings in his one start.

Although we won't detail all of the "Honourable Mentions" that you can view below, we must mention the young man who gets more print on this page than any other - LIAM HENDRIKS. Liam hit back from his rare rocky start earlier last week with another sterling winning effort that saw him produce seven shutout innings for 'AAA' Omaha. Just when we though he may have a "week off" from this page... NOT SO FAST!

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 11 AUGUST 2014

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

Back to a bit of "normality" this week with a rather more modest number of realistic nominations and, not unusually, those nominations are dominated by our young Aussie pitchers. For us, two of those stood out for our major award; namely young gun LEWIS THORPE and the more experienced JOHN HUSSEY. Minnesota's Thorpe enjoyed two strong starts that yielded just one earned run from his total of 10.0 innings, while he struck out 13. Hussey's one start for San Diego's 'AA' San Antonio club saw him hurl five shutout innings for a hard luck no-decision.

Perennial nomination LIAM HENDRIKS could no be overlooked once again with his second straight win for Kansas City's 'AAA' affiliate with, once again, a strike out per inning and zero walks. He will be joined for "Honourable Mention" by Boston pitcher DAN McGRATH who allowed just three runs from his six inning start and batter SAM KENNELLY who rattled off a tidy 8-24 (.333) with a pair of doubles and three walks.

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 4 AUGUST 2014

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

Well, we've been publishing our Pro Players of the Week for some years now but, without scanning through our archives, I really can't recall having so many serious nominations to consider. Of course that also made it a very challenging task to compare and separate some of the nominations. Anyway, here we go!

We might as well start with our regular award winner LIAM HENDRIKS who took up another challenge with a new club in his typically convincing manner. Making his first start since being traded from Toronto to Kansas City, Liam simply picked up where he left off with yet another tremendous start for their Omaha Storm Chasers. Not only did he anchor his own win with seven quality innings, but he rose to new heights with a dozen punch outs and, as usual, zero walks. Digest these numbers for his 'AAA' season to date - 103 strike outs versus 7 walks - WOW!

On this occasion he will be joined by four others while, as you will see, there were others most unfortunate to miss out on our primary award. To round off the pitchers we added Rookie Leaguers SAM GIBBONS and JOSH GUYER. Minnesota's 'Advanced Rookie' starter Sam Gibbons pitched a brilliant seven inning winning start without allowing an earned run as a superb effort. Guyer enjoyed two starts for the GCL Twins that produced one win and just two earned runs from his tally of 9.1 innings. A couple of hitters who have also featured often among our awards are Minnesota's 'AAA' star JAMES BERESFORD and Tampa Bay 'A' leaguer DARRYL GEORGE. Beresford batted 8-16 (.500) with four doubles, while George batted 10-19 (.526) with two doubles and two triples.

We felt that those five players just shaded no fewer than EIGHT nominations that we have separated for "Honourable Mention" for a variety of reasons. We fully appreciate that some of their statistics were very close to those of our major winners, but here must be a line drawn somewhere. It would take too much text to detail each case this week, so we will let you digest the individual statistics below. Rest assured that we recognised some very good efforts among them.

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 28 JULY 2014

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

It was a case of quality rather than quantity this past week. After a kind of "week off" last week with his sterling appearance in the 'AAA' League All Star Game the consistently brilliant LIAM HENDRIKS made a mighty return to normal action and to our Pro Player of the Week awards with two very strong and high quality starts for Toronto's 'AAA' Buffalo Bisons. His first start was a solid no-decision, while his more recent outing brought a terrific win from seven innings of one run baseball. His overall ratio of 17 strike outs and zero walks is nothing short of stunning!

Joining him for our primary award this week is fellow West Aussie starting pitcher WARWICK SAUPOLD who produced a winning start for Detroit's 'AA' Erie Seawolves. He hurled six shutout innings, even though he had to dance around five walks by allowing just one solitary hit.

If he had a bit larger sample, Detroit Rookie Leaguer ZACH SHEPHERD may have joined our main award winners after batting 7-17 with a double and a home run included - instead he will receive "Honourable Mention". Joining him is Boston's 'A' level pitcher DANIEL McGRATH took a solid no-decision with six innings of work that saw only two runs posted against his name. Most would agree that they were quite close to a major award nomination.

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 21 JULY 2014

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

This week we will have to give some leniency to the everyday players who have had reduced opportunities due to mid-season and/or All-Star breaks. Before we move on from that, for anyone who did not follow our US Updates, a regular winner of these awards LIAM HENDRIKS was the starting pitcher for the International League in the prestigious 'AAA' All-Star game and he, as usual, performed superbly. He struck out four from his two scoreless innings at the beginning of the game to set his team on the path to victory. In his own way, he probably earned another PPOW nomination?

One pitcher who narrowly missed our primary award was Minnesota Rookie leaguer SAM GIBBONS who pitched 5.1 innings for just the one earned run in a no-decision. Joining him for "Honourable Mention" is Colorado's 'High A' outfielder DAVID KANDILAS who was back in business after a recent taste at 'AA' level with 3-8 (.375) plus four walks that just gave him sufficient plate appearances to be considered on this special occasion.

The three players we rated just ahead of them to share our PPOW award this week are Detroit's 'AA' starting pitcher WARWICK SAUPOLD who got the nod over Gibbons by pitching one more inning (6.1) for the same one earned run allowed while, although we don't overrate it, he also scooped the win. Minnesota's 'AAA' middle infielder JAMES BERESFORD made the most of his twelve at bats with 6-12 (.500) including a double and a home run for a gaudy .833 slugging percentage plus four runs driven in. We also included Tampa's 'A' leaguer DARRYL GEORGE who went 6-17 (.353) with two doubles and a home run for his .647 slugging percentage.

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 14 JULY 2014

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

For the ninth time this season our Pro Player of the Week is that remarkably resilient and consistent young West Australian pitcher LIAM HENDRIKS. Still the most recent new Australian to reach the US major leagues, Hendriks simply continues to put his name forward for another return to the big show with sustained strong performance at 'AAA' level. He stood out from a worthy contingent of "Honourable Mentions" with his latest eight inning winning start where he allowed just two runs.

WARWICK SAUPOLD and DANIEL McGRATH both recorded one win from two starts during the past week but were not as effective overall as Hendriks - nor was NICK HUTCHINGS who won his neat five inning start. LEWIS THORPE did not pick up a win from his two decent starts, but we included him mainly because of his 10/3 ratio of strike outs versus walks across his total of eight innings.

A couple of young Rookie League hitters were most impressive this week, yet their total of at bats did not persuade us to compare their efforts with our Pro Player of the Week. CONNOR MacDONALD batted 6-12 (.500) with a home run and five RBIs to grab our attention. As did ZACH SHEPHERD whose 6-16 (.375) included four doubles and a triple for five RBIs.

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 7 JULY 2014

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

Regular readers of this site would have often heard us grumble about how difficult it can be to adjudicate on these awards, but it has rarely been more difficult than this week, especially with regard to separating our top award from our "Honourable Mentions". With some really heart-felt apologies to those who just missed our major award, we ultimately decided to elevate two pitchers and one hitter to be nominated as Pro Players of the Week.

Detroit's winning starter WARWICK SAUPOLD threw five innings for just one earned run with an 8/2 strikeouts to walks ratio, while young Minnesota starter LEWIS THORPE pitched 4.2 innings without allowing an earned run with an 8/1 ratio of strikeouts to walks. The hitter to join them is CONNOR MacDONALD who rattled off 10-26 (.385) for Houston's Dominican Summer League rookie team Astros Blue.

The three pitchers who were most unfortunate to fall JUST under the line for "Honourable Mention" are perennial nomination LIAM HENDRIKS, young gun DANIEL McGRATH and another rookie league arm SAM GIBBONS. Twins starter Gibbons may have been the most unlucky after striking out ELEVEN and walking none across his six inning losing start that yielded two earned runs. Boston rookie McGrath allowed two earned runs from seven innings while he also took a hard-luck loss. Hendriks allowed two earned runs from six innings for a no-decision with a rather typical 8/1 strike outs versus walks for Toronto's 'AAA' Buffalo club. Although he pitched only three innings, we just had to add Pittsburgh's short-season 'A' pitcher SAM STREET who did not allow a solitary base runner in that outing. Last, but hardly least, was San Diego's AROOS outfielder COREY ADAMSON who had a relatively few 15 at bats, but his 5-15 (.333) with a triple and homer earned him a .667 slugging percentage.

Finally a short note of congratulations to Sydney pitcher TIM ATHERTON who has been rewarded for his terrific efforts this season with promotion from 'High A' straight to 'AAA' with the Oakland organisation.

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 30 JUNE 2014

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

We often seem to be guilty of speaking too soon in this business... only last week we were lamenting about how few players  we had to choose from for our awards and here we are seven days later contemplating a host of different choices.

We'll start with three pitchers who didn't receive a nomination because of too few innings, yet we will still recognise TIM ATHERTON, LEWIS THORPE and SAM STREET for taking wins this week, the latter from his first professional outing.

You should note that some of the players we will now list for "Honourable Mention" would have been in line for our major award on many other occasions, but the bar was set extremely high this week. A couple of "regulars" deserve another mention, namely JAMES BERESFORD and LIAM HENDRIKS. James batted 8-26 (.308), while Liam's two outings produced a rained-out four innings of shutout ball plus another effective start that left him with an "honourable" loss. Pitchers JOHN HUSSEY and NICK HUTCHINGS were really unlucky to miss our top award with starts of four and five innings respectively without allowing an earned run. Two hitters were also unlucky to just miss out with CONNOR MacDONALD batting 7-19 (.368) and AARON SAYERS batting 6-17 (.353). To round off the "Honourable Mentions" we will also recognise young rookie ZACH SHEPHERD whose 5-18 (.278) included a double and two triples for a .556 slugging percentage.

Our joint winners of Pro Player of the Week are Boston left-hander DANIEL McGRATH and Sand Diego outfielder COREY ADAMSON who had extremely compelling numbers for the past week. McGrath pitched tow starts that totalled 11.1 innings for just one earned run allowed and a 10/4 strikeouts versus walks ratio. Adamson batted 8-19 (.421) with two triples and a home run for a gaudy .789 slugging percentage. As we said, the bar was set very high indeed!

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 23 JUNE 2014

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

We didn't need too long to identify only two players who had the type of performance that we could consider for these awards this week. Even though the Rookie and Short-season leagues are cranking up, most of those players have not yet had sufficient games to come into contention.

It was only due to another quite outstanding performance that we had to deny young Queensland infielder CONNOR MacDONALD from at least a share of our top award this week. Instead Connor will receive "Honourable Mention" after batting 6-16 (.375) for the Dominican Summer League Astros Blue this week.

Pushing him unluckily out of the main award is Sydney outfielder DAVID KANDILAS who has settled extremely well at 'AA' level with Colorado's Tulsa Drillers. 'The Kandy Man' batted 5-16 (.313) for a lower average than MacDonald, but we simply could not discount the fact that his five hits featured a double, a triple and home runs from each of his last two games for a massive .875 slugging percentage. ABL trivia buffs would point to the fact that Kandilas was the first man in the modern ABL era to "Hit for the Cycle" and, although this does not count quite the same over a week of play, it was a truly extraordinary performance none the less.

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 16 JUNE 2014

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

I'm not sure that we really need to apologise for the fact that our awards have once again been dominated by much the same players - surely our subscribers understand that this has nothing to do with any lack of imagination on our part, but more a recognition of the consistent high standard these players achieve.

Once again our primary award will be shared by AROOS team mates LIAM HENDRIKS and JAMES BERESFORD who simply continue to impress with their consistent brilliance. Liam is again pushing hard for a return to the big leagues with another outstanding start for Toronto's 'AAA' Buffalo. He pitched eight innings of one run baseball with a typically effective 9/1 ratio of strike outs versus walks - how he was deprived of the win requires explanation from his team mates. James batted 8-25 (.320) over the past week and he has 13 hits from his last ten games without a hitless outing. This week they will be joined by another pitcher familiar to these awards, TIM ATHERTON, who pitched a strong start for Oakland's 'High A' Stockton Ports which comprised 6.1 innings for just one run allowed.

Just missing out on our top award, but earning an "Honourable Mention" this week is young Boston starter DANIEL McGRATH who allowed two runs from his five inning start that recorded a win. We will also add Atlanta catcher MATT KENNELLY who is not getting sufficient at bats to contend for our major award, yet he couldn't do much more than bat 5-10 (.500) from those limited opportunities. We will also briefly mention new young rookie pro CONNOR MacDONALD who started the week slowly before bursting out with 6-15 (including three doubles) over his last four games for the Dominican Summer League's Astros Blue.

We will also congratulate impressive outfielder DAVID KANDILAS for his promotion to Colorado's 'AA' Tulsa Drillers.

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 9 JUNE 2014

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

We post this a day late due to an early start for Queens Birthday football in Melbourne but we still maintain our same "Monday to Sunday" weekly time sample for our Pro Player of the Week award(s). As you will see this week our award nominations will be short and sweet with few genuine contenders on this occasion.

For the seventh time this season WA ace LIAM HENDRIKS was an obvious nomination after throwing two very good starts for Toronto's 'AAA' Buffalo team this past week. Liam was desperately unfortunate to be sent back to 'AAA' after performing so well in the majors for the Blue Jays but, as he always does, he re-focussed on his task to keep his name very much at the forefront for his next big league opportunity. His two starts saw him throw a total of 13.2 innings for a win and a no-decision - he allowed six earned runs while walking none an striking out nine. We decided not to debate the relativity of his efforts against the batting of Minnesota's 'AAA' infield star JIMMY BERESFORD who continues to be a model of consistency with the bat - he batted 9-28 (.321) for the week with a pair of doubles included.

While that all too familiar pair share our award, we will also briefly mention that Melbourne's young pitching prodigy LEWIS THORPE made his first appearance of the season this week at a new level, starting for Minnesota's 'A' club Cedar Rapids. It may not have been a stellar performance, but his progress continues to provide great interest.

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 2 JUNE 2014

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

Just for some variety, there was no opportunity for LIAM HENDRIKS to take our major award again this week because he has not had his next outing during the period. Maybe he just handed the baton to his WA team mate WARWICK SAUPOLD who pitched very strongly over two starts for the week, allowing four earned runs across 13.0 innings with one strike out per inning. Warwick will share our primary award this week with Sydney outfielder DAVID KANDILAS who, not only batted 12-24 (.500) but, when you include five doubles and a triple among those hits, he racked up a .792 slugging percentage.

Just behind them for "Honourable Mention" were Victorian pitchers DAN McGRATH and JOHN HUSSEY who also enjoyed a very good outing the past week. Young Boston lefty McGrath hurled 4.1 scoreless innings in a no-decision today, however, we just felt that five walks excluded him from PPOW consideration. Hussey pitched five innings while allowing only two earned runs for San Diego's 'AA' San Antonio Missions.

One player who would surely be sharing our PPOW award is Oakland pitcher TIM ATHERTON based on his most recent winning start, but his numbers for the week were "polluted" by an earlier start that resulted in a hard hit loss. We will also provide a brief mention for RYAN BATTAGLIA who homered during the week for Cleveland's 'High A' Carolina.

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 26 MAY 2014

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

West Australian ace LIAM HENDRIKS made a triumphant return to the major leagues this week with a first-up win for his new club Toronto Blue Jays against the in-form Oakland Athletics - he may be with a different team this week insofar as his promotion from 'AAA' but he has not missed a beat by taking a share of our primary award for the sixth time in seven weeks. However, he was not without some terrific competition on this occasion with fellow starting pitchers TIM ATHERTON and youngster DANIEL McGRATH also producing quite similar winning starts. Those three hurlers will be joined by National team batter COREY ADAMSON who batted .471, albeit from a somewhat low 17 at bats.

Unfortunate to just miss out were established infield stars JIMMY BERESFORD and STEFAN WELCH who both batted 9-25 for the week and Welch, in particular, very nearly earned a share of our main award with a pair of home runs and seven RBIs to add to his case. They will have to settle for "Honourable Mention" this week when they may have taken top billing on other occasions. Although he didn't quite have the overall numbers to earn a special mention this week, we noted that Colorado's 'High A' outfielder DAVID KANDILAS has hit safely in nine of his last ten games.

For those who closely monitor our AUSSIE STATS FROM THE US page, we might save some questioning by explaining a couple of names to appear among our Aussies in the Independent League(s) statistics. Although he is probably considered an American, CLAYTON TANNER  was born in Australia and we list him because he has represented Australia in International competition. We understand that CONNAR O'GORMAN is a New Zealander, but he is now resident in Queensland and plays with the Brisbane Bandits - we weren't sure whether to include him as a bona fide Aussie, but we decided to include rather than exclude him for the time being at least.

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 19 MAY 2014

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

Let's just make it five out of six! Well, how could we again overlook the sterling performances of our 31st and most recent new major leaguer LIAM HENDRIKS who is producing a stunning string of high quality starts for Toronto's 'AAA' Buffalo Bisons. On this occasion his team mates left him high and dry with a no-decision after he gave them every chance by pitching seven innings of one-run ball. This week he will be joined for our main award by "comeback kid" TODD VAN STEENSEL who pitched a total of five innings for one run across two relief appearances but, most notably for him, he walked none and struck out seven. Brilliant effort from both of those Aussie pitchers.

A couple of hitters came in for "Honourable Mention" this week, beginning with Colorado's 'High A' outfielder DAVID KANDILAS who batted 6-19 (.316) plus he walked five times to register a .458 on base percentage. We wouldn't usually give much recognition to a hitter who has only seven at bats for the week, yet RYAN BATTAGLIA still managed to catch our attention with his 3-7 (.429) because those three hits were three doubles and he also walked four times for a .636 on base percentage.

Although he will not feature in these awards this week, we will also give a brief mention to Australia's major league standard bearer GRANT BALFOUR who collected his seventh and eighth saves this past week.

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

POSTSCRIPT & APOLOGY:  Well, to all those observant subscribers who alerted us to a rare oversight this week, we are glad to find that our strategy for monitoring who is following our Pro Player of the Week Awards has worked a treat! If only that was the truth - the actual truth is that we have become so "blasť" about the accomplishments of Australian pitching ace LIAM HENDRIKS that we managed to strip him of one terrific start this past week. As we noted he was already in the frame for our primary award based on his most recent winning start yesterday, but we obviously missed the fact that he also had another great start on 6 May that falls within the same week of adjudication. We can only apologise to Liam and now properly include him as a joint winner of our Pro Player of the Week for the fourth time in five weeks. At this rate might have to rename our award the "Liam Hendriks Weekly Award". Sorry again Liam...

As often happens much of the cream rose to the top again this week for consideration of our PRO PLAYER OF THE WEEK Awards. Toronto's 'AAA' starting pitcher LIAM HENDRIKS posted his fifth straight win and we seriously considered him to share our primary award for the fourth time this season, but the three earned runs he allowed on this occasion left him just missing out while receiving another "Honourable Mention". Fellow recent major leaguer and new Buffalo Bisons team mate RYAN ROWLAND-SMITH also sneaks in for "Honourable Mention" with three good relief outings, as does Minnesota's TODD VAN STEENSEL who pitched 4.2 innings of relief for only one run with NINE punch outs. Atlanta's 'AA' catcher MATT KENNELLY joins them after batting .364, but from a relatively few eleven at bats.

Our chief award goes to another player very familiar to these awards - Minnesota's 'AAA' infielder JAMES BERESFORD who batted 10-27 over the week, including a GRAND SLAM home run that helped him to tally seven RBIs. Surely James must be given an opportunity at the major league level at some stage this season?

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 5 MAY 2014

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

There may be an element of "be careful what you wish for here" because, after a few weeks of grumbling about the relative scarcity of contenders for our PPOW nominations, we have a deluge of contenders this week. In fact, we really considered the rather ridiculous notion that we could have as many as seven or eight realistic contenders for our major award. In the end several of those players you will see listed can consider themselves a bit unfortunate to have missed the primary award at the end of such a competitive week.

After taking a deep breath, we simply could not go past a guy who has featured in these awards so many times that it really validates his status as Australia's most recent new major leaguer - and he continues to frank that evidence with his ability to pitch like a major leaguer while dominating at 'AAA' level. For the third time in four weeks our primary award goes to Toronto's righty starter LIAM HENDRIKS whose winning start saw him allow just one run from seven innings.

Close behind him for pitching exploits was WA team mate WARWICK SAUPOLD who allowed three runs across his six inning winning start where he struck out more than one per inning. With just a couple too few innings over the week, San Diego's 'AA' pitcher JOHN HUSSEY hurled four scoreless frames for one win. Batting wise we had several fine performers with differing totals of at bats. Maybe the best of those was Minnesota tyro LOGAN WADE, who batted .421 with five doubles from 19 at bats. Tampa's DARRYL GEORGE batted .400 from 20 at bats. Minnesota's 'AAA' star JAMES BERESFORD  emerged from a short slump to hit. 364 from 22 ABs, while Colorado's DAVID KANDILAS batted .308 from 26 ABs. With too few at bats to push for our top award were MATT KENNELLY (.462 - 13AB) and COREY ADAMSON (.444 - 9AB - .889 SLG%).

A couple of pitchers just missed nominations due to their few total innings - those were comeback man TODD VAN STEENSEL (3.1 scoreless innings) and JOSH SPENCE (3.0 scoreless innings). As we said, it was a busy week!

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 28 APRIL 2014

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

We may have used the words "slim pickings" to describe the relative lack of Australian players pushing for our PRO PLAYER OF THE WEEK Award(s) last week, yet we had an even easier task this week with only two pitchers catching our attention.

After considering whether to separate the pair for our primary award or an "Honourable Mention", we decided that this would serve no reasonable purpose and that both would share our PPOW Award - and, as you will see, both are now two time winners this season from only three weeks of adjudication. Australia's 31st and still most recent new major leaguer LIAM HENDRIKS put himself in the frame for the "umpteenth" time with another brilliant winning start for Toronto's 'AAA' Buffalo Bisons. Oakland's 'Advanced-A' starter TIM ATHERTON was equally impressive for the second week running and he could find himself playing at higher levels this season.

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 21 APRIL 2014

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

Somewhat slim pickings for our second award week of the 2014 season.

In the end we may have been a bit hard on our recent major leaguer LIAM HENDRIKS who pitched another fine outing for Toronto's 'AAA' Buffalo Bisons after he struck out eight across 6.1 innings for a no-decision. He will receive an "Honourable Mention" on this occasion, along with DARRYL GEORGE who sneaked in with 7-23 (.304) with Tampa's 'A' team Bowling Green Hot Rods. Another "Honourable Mention" will go to Detroit pitcher WARWICK SAUPOLD who took a loss with their 'AA' team Erie, but he also struck out more than one per inning in a solid effort. Young 'High A' players COREY ADAMSON (6-22) and DAVID KANDILAS (7-25) just missed out on special mention, even though Adamson enjoyed a home run.

The man who stood out clearly for us this week was Oakland Athletics' pitcher TIM ATHERTON who produced two fine winning starts for their 'Advanced A' Stockton Ports. His two wins comprised 12.0 innings for three earned runs, with 15/2 strikeouts versus walks.

'Flintoff & Dunn' selected this player for our top award this week:

  'Flintoff & Dunn's PRO PLAYERS OF THE WEEK' - 14 APRIL 2014

Congratulations to this weeks selection of our F&D Pro Player(s) of the Week.

Welcome back to our first PPOW for the new 2014 US professional season. With only the "upper leagues" seeing much action early in the new season I guess we should not be surprised to have some very familiar faces featuring in the first awards of the season.

So, let's not hang around here. The players who earned "Honourable Mention" are major leaguer GRANT BALFOUR, RYAN SEARLE and LOGAN WADE. Balfour, who has returned to his former club Tampa Bay Rays after a turbulent and well publicised off season as a free agent, notched three saves for the week and he is yet to allow an earned run so far this year. Searle recorded a win while pitching 3.1 scoreless innings while pitching relief for the Chicago Cubs 'AA' Tennessee Smokies. Young Queenslander Wade batted .310 for the week with the Twins 'A' Cedar Rapids Kernels.

The two players who clearly stood out to share our primary award this week are regulars for this award and a couple of players who represent the future of Team Australia. Still our latest new major leaguer, pitcher LIAM HENDRIKS is doing plenty to impress his new team Toronto Blue Jays in the early part of this season. Over the past week Liam has pitched 7.2 innings of scoreless, two-hit baseball, while walking none and striking out six - as you will see he already has two wins for the 2014 season and he is yet to allow a run. His former Minnesota twins club mate JAMES BERESFORD has also hit the season running with their 'AAA' Rochester by batting 12-24 (.500) with a .556 on base percentage.
